HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Wallace State’s basketball teams were swept by Shelton State at Tom Drake Coliseum on Tuesday night.
The 21st-ranked Lady Lions lost 71-53 to No. 16 Shelton State, while the Wallace State men fell 67-48 in the nightcap to the Bucs.
Both women’s teams entered Tuesday as nationally-ranked squads for yet another season. The rivals traded leads five times over the game’s opening seven minutes before Shelton State grabbed a slim 11-10 advantage with 12:43 left in the first half. The Lady Bucs never trailed again.
Shelton State led by as many as 10 points in first half, maintaining a 33-23 cushion at the break. The Lady Bucs pulled away early in the second half, using a 16-6 surge to construct a 49-29 lead with 11 minutes to go.
Wallace State, the defending Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) North Division champion, had its regular-season home winning streak snapped at 21 games.
Shelton State (20-1, 2-0) won its 18th game in a row.
Morgan Smith, the conference’s second-leading scorer, led Wallace State (17-3, 0-2 ACCC) in the loss with a game-high 25 points. She scored 12 of Wallace State’s opening 23 points.
Kaneisha Mixon scored 10 points for the Lady Lions and Sydney Houston chipped in with nine.
Keyuana Thompson led Shelton State with 16 points and Tcheneavia Knight scored 15.
Shelton State 67, Wallace State 48
Shelton State exacted some revenge Tuesday night after falling in the ACCC title game to the Lions last season, outscoring Wallace State 29-15 over the final 15 minutes of the game for the Bucs second conference victory.
After a 23-all tie at halftime, Wallace State controlled its biggest lead of the game, at 31-26, after Kriston Beasley drained a 3-pointer with 17:53 remaining. Linwood Ruffin added a layup on Wallace State’s next possession for a 33-28 advantage.
Shelton State answered with a rapid 10-0 run over the next two and half minutes and led 38-33 with 15 minutes left.
A 3-pointer by Shelton State’s Blake Sanderson extended the Bucs’ advantage to 43-36 with 10:49 left.
Wallace State (10-11, 1-2 ACCC) never got closer than within seven points the rest of the way.
Ruffin led Wallace State in the loss, scoring nine of his 12 points in the second half. Jacob Barrett scored all eight of his points in the first half and Xavier Mills and Immanuel King added six apiece.
Jykwentin Johnson paced Shelton State (15-4, 2-1 ACCC) with 16 points, Jevaris Richey scored 12 and Eric Wortham Jr. added 10.
Both Wallace State basketball teams host Southern Union on Sunday, beginning with the women’s game at 2 p.m.
