For the second consecutive start, Dalton Rentz threw 6 innings of no hit baseball and was in complete control. However, after tossing 13 consecutive no hit innings, the lead off hitter in the top of the seventh inning flaired a Texas Leaguer right over John Holland's head at shortstop, ending his consecutive no hit bid. Nonetheless, the Pirates took care of business in a solid 6-3 win over the visiting Chargers of Georgia Highlands College.
The Pirates got going early and often, as the 2 out RBI hit was the theme of the offensive day for CVCC. After Tyler Lynn reached on a 2 out double, Trevor Kieboom drove him in to give Rentz a 1-0 lead right off the bat.
In the second, with some more 2 out magic, Kenny "Smoov" Ford reached on a single, stole second and was driven in by Jeff Ronpirin for a 2-0 advantage.
Clinging to a 2-0 lead and with Rentz in cruise control, the Pirates once again, got going with 2 outs in the fourth. Ronpirin reached on a fielders choice and advanced to third on Holland's single, his second of 4 hits on the day, and advanced to second on the throw. Then the Pirates caused a bit of excitement as Ronpirin stole home to put the Pirates up 3-0 and Lynn and Kieboom followed with RBI singles to push the lead to 5-0.
The Chargers finally got to Rentz in the 7th, when after the first hit of the game, Big Donkey got a punchout, his last of 7, and gave up back to back doubles, as the Chargers closed the gap to 5-2.
Willie T Tillery came in and shut the door to close the inning with no further damage. Meanwhile, the Pirates got one of those runs back in their half of the 7th with more 2 out hitting. Ford drew a 2 out walk, stole second, stole third, and scored on the errant throw to push the lead back to 4, at 6-2.
GHC got one back on an unearned run off of Tillery, who got 3 consecutive ground balls, but again, he buckled down and allowed nothing else.
With a three run lead in the 9th, it was Brownie Time, as closer Chris Brown came in and shut the door, but not without a little excitement. A pair of singles, a walk, an errant pickoff throw, and a passed ball on a strikeout made things interesting. However, Brownie picked a guy off of second and punched out 2 guys to end the threat and the game for a final of 6-3 good guys.
The Pirates are now 6-1 on the season and will play host to ABAC on Saturday for a 1:00 pm eastern double header.
