The Pirates continued their hot hitting and strong pitching Saturday, as they swept ABAC at Howard Lake Field by scores of 9-3 and 10-1.
In Game 1, the Pirates wasted no time getting on the board, as the began the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive extra base hits, and a total of five in the inning, highlighted by John Holland's triple, Ty Lynn's double and Drew Lingo's double, all driving in runs.
With a 4-0 lead, starter Hunter Mitchell went to work, as he absolutely dominated the Stallions of ABAC, taking a no hitter into the 6th inning. This is the fourth game of the young season that the Pirate pitching staff has taken a no hitter into at least the 6th inning.
While Huntbo was dealing, the offense was rolling, adding a run in the second on Jeff Ronprin's RBI groundout and 2 more in the third on Jared Martin's 2 run homer to give Mitchell a 7-0 lead. However, ABAC scored an unearned run to spoil Mitchell's shutout on a walk, an errant throw by Mitchell, and another error to make the score 7-1, however, the no hitter was still intact.
With one out in the 6th, Mitchell allowed his only hit of the day - a flare right in the Bermuda triangle between the second baseman, firstbaseman and right fielder. Nonetheless, Mitchell was outstanding, allowing only the single and striking out 8 Stallions.
The Pirate offense added 2 more insurance runs in the 6th, when Holland had his second RBI triple of the day and Tyler Lynn followed him with a double to run the lead to 9-1.
Dan Lynn came on to finish things in the 7th, and after allowing 2 meaningless runs, shut the door for a 9-3 Pirate win.
Game 2 was much of the same, as Kevin Moore took the mound for his third start of the year and he took a no hitter into the third inning himself. Once again, the offense got going early and often, scoring 3 in the first, highlighted by Lynn's 2 run double and Trevor Kieboom's RBI single.
With a 3-0 lead, the Stallions added a 2 out run on a steal of home to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second. However, the offense of CVCC added 2 more in the second on Holland's and Lynn's RBI singles.
With Moore in cruise control, the Pirates added runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th innings to push the lead to 10-1. Grayson Ivey had a 3 hit day for CVCC, while Tyler Lynn was 6 for 7 on the double header.
Moore finished the day with 5 innings, allowing only 2 hits, while striking out 6 and surrendering only 2 walks.
John Kizzar and Mitch Shelby tossed shutout innings in the 6th and 7th to finish off the victory.
The two wins put the Pirates at 8-1 on the season and will travel to Tifton, Georgia on Sunday to take on ABAC in a game postponed from Tuesday.
