LBW Softball is looking forward to a great year. Coach Candace Tucker is now in her third season as head coach and will look for her large group of sophomores to take charge on the field. Sophomore pitchers Rebekkah Matheny, Taylor Scarbrough, and Chena Segree will get some help on the mound from three freshmen pitchers.
The team returns starters at seven of the nine positions and will look to provide a strong defense behind this pitching staff. The outfield will be led by returning starters Abigail Powell and Ashlee Vick who read the ball very well and provide a strong leadership component from the outfield.
Behind the plate, sophomore Caitlin Jones will split playing time with freshman Andi Hughes. Each of these players has a strong arm, knowledge of the game, and takes charge of the defense from their position. Second base is one position left open after last year's season, however sophomores Hannah Fountain and Kristy Sport are working hard each day to compete for that starting spot. Right field is another position that is wide open at this point. Several players are capable of filling this spot and will use their bats to work their way into the starting line-up.
The team will use both power and speed on the offensive side of the ball. Likely stand outs will include power hitters; sophomore Jamaica Williams, freshman Jecca Carden, and freshman Kelley Pierce. Remaining sophomores include; Kala Shaw, Edwinna "Eddie" Johnson, Terrie Sprayberry, Aleecia "Peanut" Ybarra, and Tara Rogers. Each one of these young ladies will see a substantial amount of playing time in different positions and are ready and willing to contribute to the team as needed.
Remaining freshmen include; Daisha Durant,Tara Trant, and Chanin Hancock. These ladies are a part of that pitching staff mentioned early and will provide some much needed stability to that rotation. The team is excited to begin the year and hopes to improve a great deal from last year. For some of these sophomores this will be their final season and each of them wants to end their career or their LBW career on a high note.
