The Gadsden State volleyball team is primed to take on the 2015 season. Coming off a 2014 season that saw the Lady Cardinals post a 28-17 record and finished runner-up at the Alabama Community College Conference Tournament, GSCC is reloaded for a run at the state title. Coach Sanders is in her 11th year at Gadsden State.
Sophomores include outside hitter Emma Easley, who was an ACCC All-Region 22 second team selection last year; defensive specialist Chassidy Farmer; setter Riley Carter; libero J'Nae Fraser; setter/defensive specialist Kaycee Willingham; and opposite hitters Anna Sanders and Abbie Mills.
"Emma's a full-time starter and she won't come out." said Sanders. Emma hits the ball hard and is one of the top two passers on the team. "She's a great young lady and captain of our team." adds Sanders. Chassidy's very versatile and a great defensive player who can play left back or middle back defense. "Riley Carter played more of a defensive roll last year, and I'd like to work Riley into more of a setting role." Kaycee was the squads' primary setter last year. "Along with setting, Kaycee passes so well I have a lot of options with her versatility. J'Nae will be my libero, and she's top of the line, too." said Sanders. Anna Sanders and Abbie Mills provides for a big block on the right side defending our opponents strongest hitters.
As always in Sanders' program, freshmen are expected to contribute immediately. "We've had a few preseason scrimmages, and the freshmen are playing well." said Sanders. "I think we can put a strong team together with our sophomore experience and athletic freshman." The freshman class features middle hitter Jewel Mathis from New Hope, middle hitter Jada Carr from Benjamin Russell, middle hitter Tamaria Mays from Jacksonville, outside hitter Summer Hinton from Addison, outside hitter Courtney Rowe from Sand Rock and setter JoLee Dobbs from Walker.
The Lady Cardinals have traveled to Tyler, TX for their season opener. "I need to expose our girls to the speed of Texas volleyball early, therefore; they will be better prepared for conference play." said Sanders.
The ACCC Tournament will be played at Beck Field House October 30th, 31st and November 1st.
Connie Clark is a veteran member of the Cardinal volleyball squad going into her 9th season with Sanders. "I've been fortunate to have Connie as my assistant for as long as I have. I don't actually consider her as an assistant but more as a co-coach and friend. She's a great balance to this program and she contributes to our success daily.
